• The early history of Seminole County is punctuated by military activity, exploration and early homesteaders in pursuit of agriculture. Here is a bit of information regarding those early communities, villages and forts that you may want to visit.
  
  
• Fort Mellon
  The fort's history can be traced back to 1837 when the U.S. Army camp on the shores of Lake Monroe was attacked by Seminole Indians. During the attack, Captain Charles Mellon was killed. Thereafter, Camp Monroe was named Fort Mellon and the surrounding village was known as Mellonville. In 1883, Mellonville was officially dissolved and became part of Sanford.
  
  
• Sanford
  Sanford was founded in 1870 by General Henry B. Sanford, who brought two colonies from Sweden to help develop the community. The workers labored for him one year in return for their travel expenses. The community became a transportation center for rail roads and steamboats. Later it became an agricultural center and was know as Celery City until 1974.
